Meucci non aveva abbastanza soldi per rinnovare il brevetto annuale del suo “telettrofono”, depositato nel 1871 e il brevetto definitivo fu fatto il 7 marzo 1876 da Alexander Graham Bell.
Soltanto l’11 giugno 2002 il Congresso Usa ha riconosciuto il contributo del fiorentino in questa invenzione.
